Dr. Leonard Covello was a great Educator and his career had a huge impact on the Italian Immigrant Community of East Harlem in the 1950s, especially when he became the first Italian American Principal of a NYC High School. Among his students at Benjamin Franklin H.S. was John Imperio, a respected Medical Doctor, a Founding Member of Casa Belvedere and a witness to and the recipient of the influence and leadership of Dr. Covello. A presentation on the life of Leonard Covello by Rosa Pietanza, former President of the Italian Teachers’ Association, will be followed with a short video by Lou Barrella and a “live” interview with John Imperio. Please join us to celebrate these two great Italian American “Doctors”!

Description

About the speaker: Lou M. Barrella, M.A. has been a dedicated Music Educator for over 50 years, specializing in Music and Opera Appreciation. Most importantly, he has given workshops and organized student trips for the Education Department of the Metropolitan Opera for 40 years and continues to do so. He has been a Guest Lecturer at Colleges, Museums and Cultural Institutions; and has made over 900 presentations since 1993, including over 75 for us at Casa Belvedere since 2010. Lou was instrumental in establishing the Enrico Caruso Gallery on the third floor of the Mansion and has also assisted in many other events here including the annual Car Show & Festa, Special Luncheon & Dinners, the Presepio and Outdoor Film Nights.
