A two-part event at Casa Belvedere

Naples was born of song which remains embedded in the heart and soul of all Neapolitans. If Naples stops singing, it will die! The Neapolitan Song is beloved throughout the world because of its melodies and strong and dramatic reflections of life. Emotional outbursts combined with heartfelt singing always move the listener. This presentation will highlight the history and cultural background of many familiar songs that showcase the attraction of “La Canzone Napoletana.”

Part One on Tuesday, June 18 • 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM : Video presentation and discussion by Lou Barrella and Anita Sanseverino, moderated by Beatrice Alecci. Includes Neapolitan Sfogliatelle pastry and coffee.

Part Two on Tuesday, June 25 •. 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM : “Musica Napoletana Sotto le Stelle” featuring Neapolitan singer Antonio Guarna with commentary by Beatrice Alecci, Lou Barrella and Anita Sanseverino. The dinner will feature Neapolitan cuisine.

About the Speakers:

Louis Barrella has been a dedicated music educator for 50 years, specializing in Music and Opera Appreciation in schools and for many cultural organizations. He has presented workshops and organized student trips for the Education Department of the Metropolitan Opera for over 40 years, and continues to do so for senior students.

Louis has been a guest lecturer at colleges, museums and cultural institutions throughout the metropolitan area and beyond, making 700 presentations since 1993. He also promotes Italian heritage with passion by presenting topics on the regions of Italy, the Neapolitan Presepio, La Festa di San Giuseppe, Carnevale di Venezia, and Pride in our Traditions.

He is a Board Member of the Enrico Caruso Museum; a co-host at the Columbus Citizens’ Foundation Opera Nights; a regular presenter at the Mario Lanza Luncheons at the Garibaldi Meucci Museum; and at Casa Belvedere.

Anita Sanseverino is an award-winning photographer dedicated to the subject of Italy as well as a lecturer and scholar of Italian history and culture. Anita Sanseverino is a recipient of the Woman of Achievement in the Arts (NJ) and has exhibited her photographs at the 2009 Tuscia Arts Festival in Viterbo, Italy, the Columbus Citizens Foundation, and Queens College in New York. She has presented her photographs and lectures about the Presepio Napoletano, Carnevale di Venezia and the region of Puglia at the Italian American Museum, Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere, Westchester Italian Cultural Center, the Garibaldi Meucci Museum, Ramapo College, Wagner College, and St. John’s University as well as at various Italian American organizations throughout the tri-state area.
