Venice, Then and Now
Tuesday, April 9 at 7 pm
Presented by Dr. Snjezana Smodlaka
Through the most famous works of art by Venetian painters, take a visual journey into the glorious past of this spectacular city, its streets, canals, palaces of the affluent and their lifestyle and fashion.
Golden mosaics of St. Mark Basilica will tell a story of the city’s spiritual patron. The Doge Palace – the seat of the government – will testify how skillfully Venetian used the art and diplomacy to promote and glorify their power. Venetian painters actually created a kind of valuable document that narrates the history of naval, commercial and cultural history and influence that this tiny piece of land exerted for more than a thousand years over most of the Mediterranean.
