The Neapolitan Presepio: A Christmas Tradition That Endures in the Italian American Community
Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 7 to 9 pm in the Galleria
Free for members, suggested donation for non-members
Join us for a fascinating holiday cultural program presented by Anita Sanseverino and Lou Barrella! The lecture and video presentation explores the origins of the Neapolitan tradition as well as its endurance by creative artisans and those who display their art, both of old and of today.
Photographs in the shops and studios of Via San Gregorio Armeno in Naples, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and in churches and homes throughout the metropolitan area provide a variety of expression that keeps the Presepio (the Nativity scene set in flamboyant Naples) a vibrant symbol of Christmas.
Included are the Presepio della Pace of the Campania Society, the FDNY Presepio della Solidarietà displayed at Casa Belvedere, and others in Italy and Brooklyn, including one at St. Frances Cabrini Church and one in the home of Anthony Pignalosa.
Appropriate music sung by Renata Tebaldi, Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli, among others, will enhance your visual enjoyment.
