A hybrid cultural program (in person or virtual)
Tuesday, May 2 at 7 pmWho or what are the Italkim? Anita Sanseverino will explore these questions and others and discuss the importance of this special Jewish community of Rome.
Most people are familiar with the Ashkenazi and Sephardic groups, but not much is heard about the Italkim. They are unique: They are the longest continuously existing Jewish community in the Western world!
Learn about this special community, where they came from and why, how they are as much Roman (if not more so) than their fellow Romans, and how they managed to hold onto their unique culture while absorbing not only Roman and Italian culture, but that of other Jewish communities who came much later.
Join Anita to learn about this fascinating group of Romans, either in person at Casa Belvedere or virtually via Zoom.

Assisi work is a kind of hand embroidery that originated in Medieval Italy. The technique produces a colored background where the motif in the design is void – that is, left blank. So, you get the color background, and the design stands out because it is not colored. Assisi work was popular as an ecclesiastical embroidery technique, where rich designs would be worked for altar frontals, vestments, and other church uses. The name originates from the town of Assisi, where this technique was often worked in convents responsible for providing church textiles.
