Once Upon a Time in Brooklyno
Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8 pm
Once Upon a Time in Brooklyno is a journey into one of the largest and most famous Little Italy neigborhoods in the United States and the world: Bensonhurst, where you can feel the Italian vibe and find Italian traditions. It was here that most Italians landed after leaving behind their motherland in pursuit of the American dream and in search of a better life.
Attracted by all of this, Michele, an Italian who moved to Manhattan in 2003, decided to move to Bensonhurst in 2018, after discovering that he and his wife would soon become parents to twins. The couple decides to settle down in the heart of Little Italy, where Michele knew he would find everything he missed after all these years far from home.
Before long, Michele discovers that Bensonhurst is no longer what it used to be, and that many Italians no longer live in this area anymore. In search of what remains of the old neighborhood, Michele met with those immigrants who arrived in Bensonhurst 60 years ago. With so much nostalgia in their words, but especially in their eyes, they tell the history and traditions of this neighborhood – and why everyone left.

Tracing threads of the past: Collective Crochet at Casa Belvedere
The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere79 Howard AvenueTracing threads of the past: Collective Crochet at Casa Belvedere
Presented by Luci Callipari-MarcuzzoTracing threads of the past: Collective Crochet is an in-person participatory collaborative performance, workshop and dialogue, which invites participants to crochet chains of red cotton thread, a symbol of the chain migration scheme in which many immigrants to Australia and North America were participants.
The collective gesture, through the repetitive action of making chains of crochet in a communal setting, reflects on the continuous experience of movement and migration, for economic, social and familial reasons, and interprets these handcrafted artifacts and spoken word exchanges into transcultural conversations of our shared interwoven stories of departure and arrival.
Collective Crochet has previously engaged participants in Mildura and Melbourne in Australia; Rome in Italy; and is continuing its transnational journey to North America.
Join Luci Callipari-Marcuzzo in this introspective journey! Only 20 seats available.
