Pagliacci or Clowns is an Opera with music and libretto by Ruggero Leoncavallo. After seeing Mascagni’s success with Cavalleria Rusticana, he decided to write an opera in the new verismo style himself.  It was based on a story from his childhood: a murder resulting from a series of romantic entanglements involving two men and a village girl. Leoncavallo’s father, a judge, was the presiding magistrate over the criminal investigation. This realistic drama coupled with Leoncavallo’s exciting music always makes for a wonderful evening in the theater!
