Celebrating Dante Alighieri 700 years after his death.

Dante meets Ulysses: A journey through the Inferno’s XXVI canto   • Live from Rome!

The most dramatic event in Canto XXVI is Dante's meeting with Ulysses, who carried out the strategy of the Trojan Horse, which led to the fall of Troy and eventually to the founding of the Roman line by Aeneas.
Ulysses is punished for events that would have been acceptable, even praised, in the time in which he lived. Dante falters from his concept that sinners are only punished according to the social standards of their time.

In this presentation, you will discover similarities and differences between the Ulysses of the Comedy and the Ulysses of Homer Odyssey, and also between Ulysses and Dante himself.

Join us in this presentation Live from Italy on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 10 am ET, 4 pm in Italy, and 7 am PT.

If you cannot participate in the live webinar, please note that all registered attendees will receive a recording of the session. We can't wait for you to join us!

“Writing the Italian in Your Memories”: Fall Edition

    Laboratorio di Scrittura, Writing Workshop
    Saturdays, January 8, 22 and 29, 2021: 10:00-11:45am

The workshop will take place in the cottage on the left side of the mansion, which can be reached by following the paved sidewalk and stairs.

No experience necessary, just a notebook and pen!

When we look back on our past, whether a year or decades ago, our stories are often intertwined with our culture—its richness, expectations, challenges and humor. During each workshop, led by author Maria Giura, we’ll focus on how one aspect of Italian American (IA) life—identity, travel, holidays—forms the background or foreground of our memories.

We’ll read and discuss short, vibrant excerpts written by IA authors. Participants will then be given prompts to generate their own writing and, by the end of each workshop, will have produced an original piece of writing. In-person enrollment limited to 10 participants. P.S. You don’t have to be Italian to write about how Italy may be part of your memories!

Register for one, two, or all three workshops.
    Part 1: Sat., Jan. 8

Can you ever really go home again? Theresa Angela Campanosi is about to find out in LAST STOP ON THE 6, a hilarious, hard-hitting and big-hearted novel that brings to mind the movie ‘A Bronx Tale.’ Dunn’s novel tells the story of Angela, who navigates love, guilt, and red gravy as she learns the price of living in the past.

After a decade as a political activist in California, Angela is back in her childhood home about to topple her family’s tower of secrets: the truth about her brother’s accident, impending marriage and subsequent disappearance, her alcoholic father’s fall off the wagon, and her former boyfriend’s recovery from heroin addiction. And most of all, why Fat Freddie is tormenting her family.

Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 pm
A special in-person cultural event with Rossini cocktails
Presented by Dr. Snjezana Smodlaka and Lou Barrella

Proof of vaccination is required for all guests.

The Brindisi (Italian for “a toast”) is a song in which people are enthusiastically invited to drink, and has been featured in many operas.
This presentation will survey many of these wonderful arias and feature scenes where the drinking of alcoholic beverage or its effects are highlighted.

The creative genius of composers reveals the masterful way in which they portray the lyrics and sometimes very dramatic effect of their characters’ inebriation.
